Game 5 between the Dodgers and Giants did not disappoint Thursday, coming down to the last out with a controversial check-swing call (he did not swing). Unfortunately, one team with more than 100 wins was going to lose, and it happened to be the Giants.
Let’s check out how we did in our SuperDraft picks for the game, starting with the players I had my eye on most.
Pitchers
After I wrote the article, the Dodgers decided to change things up and use Corey Knebel as an opener. This move made me switch Julio Urías out of my Champion spot because it limited his upside significantly since he would miss at least one inning. He ended up not coming in until the third. Once he was in, he pitched well giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts across 4 innings. This was good for 22.48 fantasy points with his 1.55x multiplier in the superflex spot.
Logan Webb outpitched Urías, largely because of the three extra innings since he actually started the game, making him the optimal choice between the two pitchers for the Champion spot. Webb struck out seven in seven innings pitched allowing one earned run, four hits, and one walk. His excellent performance was good enough for 24 points in a superflex spot and 36 in the Champion spot, outscoring Urías in the Champion spot by 1.92 points.
Hitters
The hitters I had my eye on mostly did well. Mookie Betts was absolutely fantastic, going 4-for-4 with a stolen base that led to a run. He played so well he ended up being the optimal choice for Champion, scoring 41.33 points. If you put him in the Champion spot he needed to have a big game, and he did just that, outscoring both pitchers. Both Buster Posey and Kris Bryant scored 7.6 fantasy points thanks to their 1.9x multipliers. Bryant recorded two singles and should have also had a walk, but the umpire called a strike on ball four. Posey ripped a double in his first at-bat but was unable to get on base again. Will Smith was the biggest disappointment scoring just 3.9 points from a walk while he just missed a home run flying out to the warning track in the sixth inning.
Slate Overview
All things considered, it was a great baseball game and a fun showdown slate. The Dodgers opening with Knebel limited Urías, but he still held his own scoring enough fantasy points. Webb was fantastic yet again, proving his dominant Game 1 performance was not a fluke. Betts stole the show on offense while Darin Ruf was the lone player to hit a home run. I’ll see you next Thursday for another showdown slate for NLCS Game 5 between the Dodgers and Braves — unless there is a sweep.
