With four games on Tuesday’s slate, let’s get into some of the Multiplier plays over on SuperDraft.
Guard
Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles Lakers (1.1x score multiplier)
With the suspensions handed out from Sunday’s brouhaha in Detroit, the Lakers find themselves once again without LeBron James against the Knicks. Los Angeles is a 6-point road underdog in Madison Square Garden. However, on a four-game slate and a bunch of extra usage to go around, Westbrook makes for a fantastic play. His multiplier has risen slightly since LeBron came back from injury, and we should go back to projecting a higher ceiling for Westbrook. Without James on the court, this season Westbrook sees an increase in his usage rate of nearly three percentage points, coming in at 31.9% in those 433 minutes this year. He came up just short of a triple-double in the comeback win against the Pistons Sunday. We shouldn’t be surprised to see a similar stat line here against a Knicks defense that has taken a step back early this season. Anthony Davis is now questionable with an illness. If he’s out we should have even more interest in Westbrook whose usage rate increases even further to 36.2% in a 118-minute sample with James and Davis off the floor this season.
Jalen Brunson, Dallas Mavericks (1.5x)
Keep your eyes peeled for Luka Doncic news as we get closer to lock. This game is the “late-night hammer” so it’s possible that the news doesn’t come until the other three games have started. Without salary constraints on SuperDraft we shouldn’t be too concerned with finding acceptable pivots. With Doncic out for the last three games, Brunson has averaged nearly 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists in just over 35 minutes per game. Brunson sees a 5.1% increase in his usage rate (to 27.6%) over a 256-minute sample without Doncic. At his 1.5x multiplier, he is a must on SuperDraft if Doncic misses his fourth straight game.
Forward
Julius Randle, New York Knicks (1.15x)
On the other side of the shorthanded Lakers are the Knicks. They typically run a tight rotation no matter how many bodies are active under coach Tom Thibodeau. Randle sits tied for eighth in the league in minutes per game, illustrating how high his fantasy floor truly is. Against this Lakers squad that has been struggling all season, Randle profiles as a very strong play on SuperDraft. Per our advanced DVP tool, the Lakers have been stout against forwards this season but near the bottom of the league in limiting primary ball handlers and crafty finishers at the rim. The field may look at Randle and say no thanks due to the perception that the Lakers frontcourt is tough on opposing forwards, but Randle breaks the typical mold for players at his position who struggle against the purple and gold.
Kristaps Porzingis, Dallas Mavericks (1.35x)
Another play contingent on the Doncic news. Porzingis has been fantastic with Doncic off the floor this season, and that has continued during this recent absence. Over the past three games Porzingis has averaged 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and nearly 3 stocks (steals plus blocks) for Dallas in less than 32 minutes per game. His usage rate exceeds 30% with Doncic off the court this year. If the Mavs star guard remains out, I am keen on stacking Brunson and Porzingis in lineups.
Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons (1.35x)
This year’s first overall draft pick has been finding his footing in Detroit over the last four games. After missing the first handful of games due to injury and then a slow start from the field in his debut week, Cunningham has really poured it on from a fantasy perspective recently. While his shooting efficiency has improved, Cunningham has been contributing across the box score. He is averaging 18 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 stocks per game over the last four. As crazy as it might sound, I still believe there is more upside to be had on a night-to-night basis. In that four-game stretch Cunningham is shooting 18 times a game but only slashing 39/27/88. While the comparison is obviously not 1:1, this is a guy who shot 44/40/85 at Oklahoma State last year. I love getting to Cunningham on SuperDraft given the 1.35x multiplier plus his guard and forward eligibility.
Center
Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets (1x)
If you’ve gotten to this point of the article, you are probably realizing just how much slate-shaping news we are still waiting on. The reigning MVP is questionable once again due to a wrist injury. He was spotted doing some drills before Denver’s last game and was clearly favoring his injured wrist while dribbling. But the fact he’s listed questionable and not ruled out yet means we cannot overlook Jokic in the context of this slate. With Michael Porter Jr. off the floor this year Jokic has a 34.1% usage rate, an increase of nearly three points. If Jokic is in (and the news comes after the first game locks) he is a must for me in SuperDraft tournaments even at his floor multiplier. You can get exposure to some of the other attractive center plays like Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo, Julius Randle and Kristaps Porzingis at forward given their multi-position eligibility.
