The Big Matchups
Week 1 of the college football season is in the books after an exciting start to the year. Marquee matchups throughout Labor Day weekend dominated the discussion entering the weekend. As usual, the rest of the slate produced entertaining close games.
No. 1 Alabama clobbered Miami (FL) 44-13 and several of the stars we recommended for DFS play were dominant. Quarterback Bryce Young (1.2X) raced to a top finish and receiver Jameson Williams (1.6X) outproduced his teammates in the landslide victory. We also saw rusher Trey Sanders race ahead of the backfield pack.
Meanwhile, there was turmoil throughout the rest of the top-10. Oklahoma and Ohio State survived scares against Tulane and Minnesota, respectively, and both hit the over in their contests. Each battle revealed massive DFS plays.
Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt nearly pulled the upset in Norman as he accumulated 296 yards and three scores. Oklahoma star Spencer Rattler (1X) was solid enough to lead winning lineups, but more is expected from him moving forward. His early pick-six set the stage for a comeback.
Cincinnati, as expected, provided tremendous DFS value for us. Playing Desmond Ridder would’ve netted you the top passer of the week thanks to five total touchdowns and over 300 total yards. Rusher Jerome Ford (1.35X) ran all over Miami (OH) as well with 121 yards and one score.
Top 25
Most of the top-25 had impressive spread covers. Oregon, Iowa, and Texas came through when it mattered most. Oregon in particular survived a tough showing by Fresno State but emerged from Anthony Brown’s veteran leadership and clutch playmaking. Texas’ quarterback Hudson Card and rusher Bijan Robinson (1X) proved to be capable stars on your lineup moving forward as well.
The Pac-12 lost one of two top competitors as Washington dropped a home game against Montana. The Huskies were longshots to make the playoff but it’s clear they never had a chance. Quarterback Dylan Morris threw three interceptions as the Huskies couldn’t get out of their own way.
Oregon and USC won last week but must continue so if the conference has any chance at making it into the playoff. USC was able to dominate San Jose State with offensive efficiency and wonderful defense. They were another quality cover despite San Jose State having a good showing even in a 23-point road loss to the Trojans.
The Bright Side of Information
Other games throughout the country proved to be solid hits. One of our top recommendations was Mississippi State rusher Jo’quavious Marks (1.4X), and he rewarded players with 98 total yards and three scores.
Marshall took a 2.5-point line and then won by 42 points at Navy thanks to quarterback Grant Wells and running back Rasheen Ali. Ali had a whopping four scores on the ground.
We were able to come out ahead despite several matchups proving uncertain until our picks pulled away. Week 1 is a danger zone as teams adjust to their new rosters. We now have more information to work with for the coming weeks.
