In an effort to be held to as high a standard as possible, we will review the process and picks that were made to see where we crushed and where we could improve. The goal is for us all to grow and attack next week as even better DFS players. As the old saying goes – if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.
The Good
Once again, we pick the correct running backs in these parts. Three of the four recommendations at RB were absolute smashes. Jerome Ford (20-189-4) was the best play on the slate by a wide margin, Jaylen Warren had himself a solid day with 33 carries for 193 yards (unfortunately without a touchdown) and the Texas A&M combo of Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane both had fine showings. If you’ll recall in the Friday article, I said the following: My gut tells me Achane will end up with fewer touches, but more yards and more TDs, which would make him an elite GPP play in this spot.
Well, two of those three things were true. Spiller got 21 touches to Achane’s 17, and Achane scored twice to Spiller’s single score. However, Spiller still put up 44 more yards than Achane. That said, once you factor in the multiplier, Achane was the better play, but you’re talking about 1A/1B territory here as both played outstandingly well. If you played them together instead of playing Kenneth Walker, you were well ahead of the field.
We hit on the UNC connection of Sam Howell and Josh Downs. Unfortunately, due to their low multipliers, they weren’t difference makers.
The Bad
We’ve tried to get cute with a QB in a great spot with a strong multiplier in back-to-back weeks, and in both weeks we’ve gotten crushed by this decision. This week’s bust was Baylor’s Gerry Bohanon. He put up an absolute dud of a game against BYU the week after shredding an equally tough WVU defense. In our defense, the Baylor offense had no trouble putting up points. The scoring just happened come via the ground game.
Further, we smashed the Kenneth Walker III button one too many times. While the nation’s leading rusher didn’t have a terrible game with 23 carries for 84 yards, it wasn’t enough for him to make a DFS impact alongside the other backs that did have ceiling games.
Additionally, Pitt WR Jordan Addison had a floor day. The vast majority of QB Kenny Pickett’s production was allocated to other pass-catchers.
The Ugly
Our lineups might be able to sustain 1-2 duds, what really hurts is missing out on some ceiling games. We had (or didn’t have, rather) our fair share of those as well.
Tyrion Davis-Price put up a ridiculous 36-287-3 performance seemingly out of nowhere. More impressive, he did it against what was previously thought of a vaunted Florida defense. Additionally, a Bo Nix and Treylon Burks game stack carried the day in Fayetteville, something that I don’t think too many people were expecting. While all of these players are talented, their game context and respective multipliers didn’t lead to them being included on many DFS rosters. But holy moly did they have awesome days.
While we did a lot of things right on this slate, there’s always room to improve, and that’s exactly what we’ll look to do next week.
